AMID the plaudits for veteran goalscorer Teddy Sheringham, West Ham boss Alan Pardew picked out two of his less acclaimed stars for praise after the 1-0 win over Wolves.

Defensive pairing Calum Davenport and Tomas Repka were each singled out for their contribution to the Irons' bright start to the season.

And the applause for Repka in particular reflected a renewed maturity in the Czech international's play.

"Tomas has played in all 13 games and only played badly once against Notts County," said Pardew.

"He let himself get a bit easy-oasy there.

"He's calmed down a lot and looks more assured about his game and more assured about the people around him."

That calmness is something of a surprise in a player who marked his arrival in English football with two red cards in three games.

But so far this season he has kept out of trouble and produced reliable displays at right back or in the centre of defence.

"Last year we were always playing catch-up, always chasing a 12-point gap and that frustration built up on him just like everyone else," added Pardew.

"There was a lot of chopping and changing in the team around him as well, but now we are in touching distance and he feels a lot more relaxed."

Davenport, on loan from Spurs, has also made a big impact in his short spell.

"He's a good player and you can see that from the way he deals with the first ball into the box," said Pardew.

"He and Tomas look like a nice pairing. We've got solidity at the back and I'm pleased with my back four."
