An historic village pub looks set to be torn down despite a storm of protest.
The proposal to knock down The Lions Den at Great Holland and replace it with a larger improved pub-restaurant is being recommended for approval by Tendring district council officers.
The pub which, according to villagers, dates back to the 1700s, has been closed for more than two years.
Owner Joseph Gilbert wants to demolish the present building in Little Clacton Road and build a new pub with a restaurant and living accommodation further back off the road, plus car parking.
The officers pointed out in a report to Tendring Council's development control committee on Wednesday, the present pub is not listed nor set in a conservation area.
And while residents had called for it to be listed, English Heritage had ruled it was not merited.
