Joe Royle felt his side deserved to snatch three points - but admitted feeling sorry for his opposite number Peter Reid.
The managerial duo are old friends and Ipswich boss Royle, having watched his team triumph thanks to a late own goal, said: "It was a fortunate way to win.
"I felt sorry for the lad and sorry for Peter - things like that always seem to happen when you're having a bad run."
He added: "In many ways, this result made up for the disappointment of only drawing at home to Reading on Tuesday.
