Bogus callers are preying on the elderly around Chelmsford with seven homes hit in a spate of cons.
Homes in Writtle, Chelmsford, Springfield and Purleigh have been targeted with three cons used to trick elderly householders.
In Mayfield Road, Wittle an 82-year-old woman opened the door to two men asking to check her drains, but refused to let them in.
Men using the same con tricked their way into the home of an 82-year-old man in nearby Ongar Road on Saturday and stole his wallet containing £20.
The men are thought to be in their 20s and one is described as wearing a brown top and having brown hair.
Reports have also been received of a man tricking his way into homes by pretending to be a police officer.
Last week the man struck twice in Chelmsford and twice in Purleigh but is thought to be operating across the county.
After distracting the householder the man steals money or valuables and a white Bedford van is often seen nearby.
A police spokeswoman advised homeowners if police officers call to ask for their identity cards, which have Braille imprinted on the back, or check their collar number with local police stations.
Anyone with information can contact Chelmsford police on 01245 491212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
