Eagle-eyed post office staff spotted a fake dollar note as a man tried to change it for real ones.
They checked the US $500 note when the man asked to swap it for US $100 notes at the post office in Head Street, Colchester.
When the staff queried it, he walked off. Police said he was white, about 5ft 10ins tall, wearing a black, leather jacket with red and white panels, a white T-shirt, blue jeans and white trainers.
Anyone with information about the man, reported at 1.30pm on Wednesday, should call police on 01206 762212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
