Blind theatre-goers can now visualise sets and on-stage action through a new audio service.
Pictures in words - Matt Simpkins of the Mercury Theatre tries out the new audio system at a performance of To Kill A Mockingbird
The Mercury Theatre has launched the system which provides a commentary for blind and visually impaired people to fully enjoy the theatre's shows.
The system will be first in use for the matinee performance of To Kill A Mockingbird on Saturday, October 9.
Users wear a receiver and headphones and are able to sit in any seat in the auditorium. It receives information through an infra-red system.
A trained audio commentator will describe the set, characters and other background information 15 minutes before the play starts. During the play the action and visual elements will also be described.
Equipment is limited and must be booked in advance through the Mercury box office on 01206 573948.
