Phil Parkinson lost no time in defending his captain Wayne Brown after Colchester United crashed out of the LDV Vans Trophy in a late-night penalty shoot-out at Layer Road.

Brown missed the vital and dramatic eighth spot-kick as Southend United eventually scraped into the second round 5-3 on penalties after the two clubs had fought out a 1-1 extra-time draw.

"I'm not going to fault anybody," said the crestfallen Parkinson. "Brownie played like a true skipper and he was one of the first to put up his hand to take a penalty."

The U's boss added: "The LDV Vans Trophy is a good competition and I would have loved to have gone through."
