A bid to knock down an old primary school and replace it with houses should be turned down, a meeting heard.

Harwich town councillors recommended initial plans be refused for a residential development at the former Harwich Primary School in Main Road.

They felt it should be kept for community use and not lost to a private company.

Essex County Council declared the premises surplus to requirements about 18 months ago after building a new primary school in nearby Barrack Lane.

Councillors recommended the plans be refused, but it is Tendring Council which will decide.
