A father and his son raised the alarm when they spotted two youths running out of a house which turned out to have been burgled.
The pair were out walking a dog in Hadleigh Road, Clacton, when they saw the two youths run out of a house and leave the front door open.
Elaine Seymour, spokeswoman for Clacton police, said: "The boy went up and knocked on the door to tell the owner the door was open and say what he had seen."
She said it was then that the homeowner realised she had been burgled and that a ruby and diamond eternity ring was missing as well as £200 in cash.
But the pair did not leave any contact details and police are now appealing for the father and son to come forward so they can help officers.
