A woman died when she was hit by a train at Colchester's main station.

At a standstill - North Station, Colchester, as emergency services arrive

Emergency services were called to platform two of the town's North Station after the incident on the London to Norwich line yesterday afternoon.

But the victim, who has not been formally identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The railway line had to be closed for about three-quarters of an hour, causing train delays and cancellations for the rest of the afternoon.

Insp Bob Munn, of the British Transport Police, said the woman's death was not being treated as suspicious.
