Ronnie Irani said today Essex could become a huge force in county cricket again - if they can sign another strike bowler.
But as the curtain finally came down on another First-Class season, the title-hungry Essex captain said the six-times county Championship kings were not targeting Surrey's Test paceman Alex Tudor, who was released yesterday.
Irani told the Gazette: "If we signed Tudor we'd have to part with one of our overseas players.
"Alex didn't play too many games for Surrey this season, but if he wants to come to Essex to prove himself I'd welcome him. I know what I'd do."
Irani pointed out: "Essex now have a squad packed with quality players of youth, talent and experience.
"One more opening bowler will put us in a position to compete with the best in county cricket.
"The arrival of Darren Gough at the start of last season was a great signing, the best since the county snapped-up legendary Australian captain Allan Border.
"Goughie's been awesome for us, a huge signing, but we need another good strike bowler and I hope the Essex committee and chairman feel the same way."
