But there was no zoo breakout, the invasion was just part of the success that was Puppet Festival Day on Saturday.
The streets of Witham, the Grove and Newland shopping centres played host to the unique family event with puppet shows throughout the day, street theatre, giant walkabout characters and puppet-making workshops for children.
Performances included an appearance by probably the largest pig in the world, measuring 30ft, gorillas getting up to mischief, an alternative Punch and Judy show and Indian dance puppetry.
