David South, 16, of St Giles Crescent, Maldon, was riding his red Cagiva moped along the town's High Street when it was involved in a collision with a silver Mondeo car at the junction of Wantz Road.
The keen West Ham supporter came off the bike just before 7pm on Friday and hit some railings. He was taken to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford but later died.
The driver of the Mondeo, a 19-year-old Maldon woman, was also taken to hospital suffering minor head injuries and severe shock.
Dozens of friends gathered at the accident spot over most of the weekend to remember David and flowers and cards have been laid on the floor.
David's eldest brother John said: "David was a popular lad. You can see that by the amount of people who have come to the accident spot and from the flowers and cards. It's amazing to see all these people coming down here. It shows how much he was liked."
