Tokon Kai karate club students Emma Stubbings and Darren Taylor have both added the second dan notch to their black belts.
Emma, 13, from Stanford-le-Hope and 14-year-old Darren, of South Woodham Ferrers, both passed their first dan test two years ago.
And their instructor, Steve Roberts, was delighted to see his pupils continue making progress. "A lot of students will pass their first dan black belt and then give up training," he said.
"Anyone who goes on further shows amazing dedication to their respective martial art. Both Emma and Darren are excellent role models for all the other children and cadet students in the club."
The teenage duo are both junior instructors at their club, teaching small beginners and lower belt children, which was part of their second dan syllabus.
"Teaching others has helped them develop their self confidence," added Steve. "Teaching also improves your skill level in karate as you have to ensure every single move you demonstrate is correct."
