Police have warned people to be wary of a scam in which thieves work in pairs to steal mobile phones or purses from victims.
The warning follows a number of incidents within the last three months in Billericay and Basildon.
During the most recent incident three people were arrested following an incident where a child approached potential victims with a map, menu or leaflet.
The child then places the item over the person's bag and asks a question.
It is only later that the victim realises their purse or mobile phone has been taken.
On a number of occasions witnesses have reported seeing a man acting suspiciously, hanging around the area and then leaving with the child.
Most of the reports have suggested that the suspects are of Eastern European appearance.
Essex Police are urging people to be vigilant and keep mobile phones and handbags close at all times, especially if approached by someone.
Anyone with information about these offences should contact their local police station or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
