The articulated lorry crashed into a barrier as it approached the queue for roadworks on the London-bound track near the A133 Colchester Central junction.
This also caused a red Honda sports car to leave the road.
The lorry driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to Colchester General Hospital.
The driver of the sports car also suffered slight injuries but did not require treatment. Neither vehicle was carrying any passengers.
Police kept one lane of the road open, but traffic jams of between six and eight miles trailed back until the road was cleared.
