A shopkeeper has said his wife could have been killed during an attempted ram raid at their store today.
Steve Jeggo, owner of Weavers and Jeggo Spar Store, in Masefield Road, Braintree, was speaking after raiders repeatedly smashed a car against the door which his wife was standing behind.
Mr Jeggo said his wife, Shirley, was badly shaken but physically unhurt in the incident at about 5.55am today. He said: "They kept trying to reverse the car at the shop door while my wife was standing there. Potentially, they could have killed her."
"I guess they've probably done about £10,000 worth of damage."
A Braintree police spokesman said up to three male suspects were being hunted, and that at 6.10am a red Rover 213 car was abandoned nearby in Nineacres. Two men, both described as of slim build with one wearing a woolly hat, were seen running off towards Brunel Road.
The ram raid was the second in the Braintree district in two days, after a stolen Toyota Land Cruiser reversed into the One Stop shop, in Kelvedon High Street, in the early hours of yesterday.
Witnesses should contact Braintree police on 01376 551312 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
