Supermarket giant Tesco has lost an appeal to build a convenience store in the heart of a residential area in Colchester.
The plans to build the store on the junction of Maldon and Drury roads in Colchester had been opposed by many residents, who packed out public meetings.
Tesco wanted to build the store on the site of the old Nigel Grogan garage on Drury Road.
It decided to appeal Colchester Council's second refusal of the scheme.
The inspector Clive Hughes has upheld the council's decision as the store's opening hours could have an impact on neighbours, an impact on the nearest neighbour and upheld the council's retail policy.
A spokeswoman for Tesco said: "We are extremely disappointed especially as we have worked very hard with the council to try and devise a scheme which we thought would be appropriate for the area."
