Harwich MP Ivan Henderson got hands-on experience of a day in the life of an RSPCA worker.
Bill meeting - MP Ivan Henderson gets hand-on experience with an exhausted cygnet
He joined Essex inspector Jim Farr yesterday and helped attend to a number of animals and raise awareness of the problems of animal cruelty.
His request to spend a day with the RSPCA followed a reception hosted by the charity on the proposed Animal Welfare Bill.
And before he knew it, he was facing another kind of bill - that of a stranded cygnet found in St Osyth.
Insp Farr, who has been with the RSPCA for ten years and covers the Tendring and Colchester area, said: "Sadly, animal cruelty is a daily occurrence and the RSPCA is called in to investigate allegations of abuse, as well as offer advice to pet owners and rescue animals in distress.
"I am delighted that Mr Henderson took time out of his busy schedule to join me for the day and get a better understanding of the work of the RSPCA."
