Ronnie Irani today welcomed the prospect of England hero Darren Gough being named as his new Essex vice-captain for next season.
The new Essex vice-captain? Strike bowler Darren Gough
The County Ground skipper said: "If Goughie wants to be my new number two I will welcome him into the role with open arms.
"The guy is an awesome cricketer, an effervescent character and a national hero. Such a move would be fantastic for him and for the county.
"Goughie would bring so much energy to the position, plus a wealth of experience at both county and international level. He has to be right at the top of the pecking order."
Gough revealed his desire to become Irani's vice-captain to former Essex and England skipper Nasser Hussain.
But, Irani warned, the county will not be making a decision about Paul Grayson's successor until later this winter.
Gough will be back in action tomorrow leading England's bowling attack in the crucial ICC Champions Trophy clash against Sri Lanka at the Rose Bowl
