The architect of Colchester's new £15 million art gallery has welcomed criticism of the proposed project, saying it is a valuable part of the consultation programme.
Welcoming criticism - Rafael Vinoly
Rafael Vinoly was in Colchester to take part in a public presentation of preliminary design ideas for the gallery, which is due to be built by 2007 on the site of the town's bus station.
Since Mr Vinoly's New York-based company was announced as the winner in the competition to build the gallery, several people, including Colchester MP Bob Russell, have questioned the need for such an arts facility in the town.
They have also raised concerns about the financing of the gallery once it is completed and the loss of the bus station from its present site.
Mr Vinoly said: "I would be worried if there was no criticism because then it would be a sign of blandness.
"I think people should be informed and pitch in whenever they see fit. Sometimes it gets heated, but that is part of the democratic process, which in turn is part of the design process."
