Elderly residents in a Braintree village were amazed to see a row of concrete bollards being put up outside their bungalows restricting access to the front of their homes.

The bollards were installed by Braintree Council on Monday, between a parking area and the grass in Forge Crescent, Bradwell, after parish councillors requested something be done to stop people parking on the grass.

But residents, some of whom are in wheelchairs, are now worried that not only do they restrict personal access but would also stop emergency vehicles from getting close to their homes.

Joan Hambly, of Forge Crescent, said: "We all feel very vulnerable. I have been worrying all night, but is it worth worrying about a bit of grass when peoples' lives are at stake?"

Mrs Hambly, 79, also claimed residents had not received any notification the work was to be carried out.

A spokesman for Braintree Council, said: "An officer has been out to look at the problems from both sides and the residents are to be consulted to find a compromise with their need for access and how to stop people parking on the grass."

She added one of the bollards would be removed to allow the residents access before the consultation.
