Major roadworks are due to start on the A12 next week.
The Highways Agency is embarking on a £9 million, three-month project to strengthen and resurface three miles of carriageway between Kelvedon and Marks Tey.
The scheme is part of a ten-year rolling programme to improve the quality and safety of the carriageways between the M25 and north of Colchester.
The works will also include the installation of new and bigger laybys, improvements to road drainage, and the addition of a hard strip to both sides of the carriageways.
Two lanes will be open in each direction during the day to keep traffic flowing, but a contraflow will be in operation 24 hours a day.
