Council tax dodgers could face night-time raids from bailiffs as Tendring Council tries to claw back £600,000 in unpaid rates.
Get-tough councillors are set to stage the district's biggest clampdown on people who refuse to pay their bills.
Pierre Oxley, revenues and benefits portfolio holder, revealed he is pushing for round-the-clock bailiffs in a bid to catch out council tax cheats when they are home in the evenings.
He said: "People think bailiffs turn up between 9am and 5pm but we want to put a bit of surprise back into it. They could come down at 8pm or 9pm at night.
"We want to scare people who won't pay their council tax. It will be our biggest clampdown on council tax non-payers."
The council hopes the zero-tolerance approach will bring in some of the £600,000 expected to remain unpaid this year.
