A robber with a knife held up a Colchester chip shop, forcing staff to hand over money.
But the man, wearing a woollen beanie hat, got away with just £40 from the takeaway, in Wethersfield Road, Monkwick.
Det Sgt Roger Napier, of Colchester CID, said: "It seems like the act of a desperate man. I think somebody in the area may well be able to identify him.
"But certainly if anybody saw somebody who was hanging about before the robbery or running away afterwards we would like to hear from them."
The man is described as white and aged about 26. He was wearing a a dark, waist-length zip-up jacket at the time of the robbery, about 10.25pm yesterday.
Anyone with information about the robbery should call police on 01206 762212 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111
