A former Basildon police chief has been singled out for praise at the first ever Essex Police annual awards dinner.
Denis Sheppard, who was chief superintendent from 1997-2003, was given a special award for his commitment to raising standards in the force.
Mr Sheppard, 49, was a key player in the formation of the Action programme which encouraged officers to improve leadership skills and take on extra responsibilities.
At the black-tie dinner at Stockbrook Manor, Billericay, the former divisional commander was given a glass award and certificate, and received the congratulations of over 150 assembled guests.
Mr Sheppard, who now lives in Brentwood, said: "The Action programme was designed to make sure we got the best out of everyone in the organisation and that we celebrated their success.
"This event, where over 70 officers have been praised, is the end result of Action and proves that we are being more proactive in helping people achieve their potential.
"It is nice to be recognised but I'm more happy about how this event has shown how much good work is going on for the people of Essex."
