The Adnams winter series at Hullbridge's Brandy Hole yacht club got off to a roaring start as high winds battered the River Crouch.
Force eight gales were forecast and gusts of 30 knots were registered on Sunday as yachtsmen wrestled with the elements during the contest.
Only 12 of the 21 starters made it to the starting line, but those that dared set sail enjoyed thrilling racing over the 12 mile course.
The Up River Yacht Club held their ladies race for dinghies, which added to the spectacle as the cruisers crossed the finish line, winning admiration from all and proving that the Olympics has certainly sparked interest in sailing as a sport.
