Traffic congestion has been pinpointed as one of Braintree's biggest headaches.
Braintree councillors are concerned the town is becoming choked with traffic since the new A120 opened and fear the problem is proving a major bugbear for local residents.
Their worries were highlighted on Friday morning when the town became gridlocked after a bus broke down on the Galleys Corner roundabout causing major tailbacks.
Stisted and Cressing councillor Lynette Flint claims worst fears of traffic chaos have been realised following opening of the new stretch of dual carriageway in July.
The 11-mile section of road between Dunmow West and the Braintree bypass, completed a 15-mile stretch of dual carriageway linking the town with the M11 and Stansted Airport.
Cllr Flint argues that part-time traffic lights installed to control the flow of traffic at Galleys Corner have only made the situation worse.
At last week's full council meeting she called for close monitoring of the situation by the county council.
Green councillor James Abbott accused the council of "failing miserably" in its bid to tackle traffic problems.
Cllr Roger Walters cabinet member for environment and highways met with highways bosses last week and raised members' concerns.
