A teenager from Shoebury died after his car crashed into a lamppost and flipped onto its side.
Andrew Jones, 19, of Kingfisher Close, was travelling towards Shoebury along Thorpe Esplanade, when he lost control of his black Ford Escort near Thorpe Bay Yacht Club, just after 5.30am on Saturday.
Police do not know what caused the accident, but it is thought the vehicle was sent into a spin after clipping the kerb.
The Escort hit a road sign before crashing into a lamppost and coming to rest on its side.
The man was taken by ambulance to Southend Hospital but died of severe head injuries.
