Up to 400 new homes, shops and offices could be built on a former gasworks in a mid-Essex town.
Plans to redevelop the British Gas Site in Wharf Road have been submitted to Chelmsford Borough Council by Transco's property arm, SecondSite.
The company is seeking outline permission for between 320 and 400 homes, business and leisure facilities and a new access road.
Nick Hollands, of RPS, acting on behalf of SecondSite, said the aim of the application is to establish the principle of mixed use development for the site.
There are no detailed plans yet, but SecondSite has been working with British Gas to gain consent for a development, including homes, retail units, offices, financial and professional services and public buildings, which will then be put out to tender to developers and construction companies.
In addition to the main development, British Gas is seeking to replace the existing gas holders and pressure reduction station and replace it with a smaller, more modern and less noisy facility with gas pressure functions.
A spokesman for Chelmsford Borough Council said the application will need to be examined in a lot of detail before being brought before town councillors and a decision before the end of the year is unlikely.
