Valerie Costello, 64, who has cancer, swam 42 lengths in memory of her granddaughter, who died of a debilitating illness.

Accompanying her on much of the swim were her daughter, Denise Gould, and granddaughter, Katie Raymond.

In all they made at least £1,800 in sponsorship which will go to funds to buy a special vest for people with cystic fibrosis to help them with their physiotherapy.

A appeal fund was set up by the family in memory of Valerie's 13-year-old grand-daughter Sammy Jo Raymond, who died last year.

It had raised £12,000 before the swim.

Mrs Costello, of Kings Parade, Holland-on-Sea, was overjoyed. She said: "I feel it's a great weight off our shoulders."

The swim was completed at the pool at Valley Farm, Clacton.
