A historic home in Hockley could be demolished to make way for a block of 13 flats.
The 17th Century property in Southend Road was for many years the home and surgery of Dr George Jones, the village GP.
Developers SPC Ltd have put forward plans to demolish the house which is a landmark building in the area and replace it with a two storey block of 13 flats with parking and access off Hockley Rise.
Resident Gabrielle Yeadell said: "What we are being threatened with is the destruction of a 17th century property and replacing it with flats simply because of what developers want."
David Grew, agent for the developers, said the existing building was suffering from subsidence, needed underpinning and major refurbishment.
He added: "It is in the middle of Hockley and is ideal for flats.
"Over the years, it has been substantially altered and this why it is only on the local list and not on the national list of buildings of historical or architectural interest.
"There is no reason why this should not be an acceptable development on this site."
A decision on the scheme will be made by Rochford District Council's planning committee at a later date.
