Nineteen smacks and seven barges battled it out on a course which took them from Bateman's Tower in Brightlingsea to Clacton Pier and back again.
The Pioneer also set out on her first competitive sail, although she wasn't classed as a competitor.
Brightlingsea's own Ethel Alice won the Smack race, getting back in just six hours, 27 minutes and 23 seconds, and second and third place were close behind.
Ellen, built in Rowhedge, was back just two seconds behind the winner, followed three seconds later by Kate.
