Southend United winger Michael Kightly is bidding to become a first team regular at Roots Hall after finally recovering from a double injury setback.

Michael Kightly - facing big season

The 18-year-old Benfleet-based youngster suffered calf and knee problems but, having now regained full fitness, is desperate to force his way back into Steve Tilson's plans during what he has dubbed the "biggest season of his career."

"I want to try and get in the matchday 16 as quickly as I can because this is a massive season for me," he said. "This year is so important for me as my contract is up in May and this season is going to be the biggest one of my career.

"I personally think it will determine whether I can establish myself at Southend or if I am going to drift down the leagues."

But Basildon-born Kightly, who made 17 appearances for the Seasiders last term, added he was anxious to secure his future with the club he once watched from the stands.

"I want to stay at Southend and I want to sign a new contract here," he declared. "The only way that's going to happen though is if I play the best I can and get in the side."
