The Essex branch of the Royal British Legion is piloting a major initiative aimed at boosting membership and educating people about the hundreds of county residents it helps each year.
Colonel Mike Dewar launched the project at Essex County Cricket club yesterday.
Dave Kliber, who is responsible for administering the Legion in Essex, the third largest branch in the UK, said: "The Legion is 80 years old and its membership is old.
"There are not many soldiers and sailors who see it as something they need. After the wars, everyone joined. Today, we are lucky if we get five per cent, but the need is still there."
