Chelmsford Council has confirmed that it is looking at getting rid of its cash payment facility at the offices in Duke Street.
People wanting to pay their council tax and other payments, such as parking permits, travel passes or fines by the usual way may find the facility stopped from next year. But the council is looking at providing paying-in facilities at post offices and shops across the borough.
A council statement said: "We are considering a number of options in order to make best use of our resources bearing in mind the rapid decline in numbers of people who now use this service.
"We will be consulting with users shortly but any alternatives would aim to improve the provision for people wanting to make cash payments."
