Students returning to Colchester Sixth Form College to enrol on their courses were ordered from the premises after a chemical spill.
The drama unfolded at the college in North Hill, at 12.30pm yesterday when staff alerted the emergency services to the spillage in the chemistry block.
Phil Brighty, press officer for the college, said no teaching had been taking place as the day was purely for administration.
Three fire crews and a paramedic attended the incident, which involved a member of staff dropping a bottle containing the chemical strontium chloride.
