A couple today told of their fury that the teen who ploughed a stolen 4x4 through their front garden wall and then scarpered was only cautioned by police.
Michael and Sweetin Green, of Furtherwick Road, Canvey, claimed the lad should have been dealt with more severely. The four-wheel drive crashed head-on through the wall while the couple sat inside and watched television.
Maths tutor Mr Green, 59, said: "I saw a bare chested youth with short trousers running away. "He was later arrested."
The crash happened at 5.30pm on Monday, August 23. Mr Green discovered this week the 18-year-old culprit was eventually arrested and given a caution. Neither him or his 55-year-old wife think that's good enough.
Acting Insp at Rayleigh Police, Kevin Diable-White said the punishment given was appropriate.
He said: "Unfortunately it's not Mr Green's choice. There are no previous convictions and the actual gravity of the offence means a caution."
Insp Diable-White said if Mr Green was not satisfied he could take out a civil action.
