MORE than 25 police officers today evicted a group of travellers off derelict land near Southend Airport. The group had been told to get off the Warners Bridge site by 10pm last night but had not moved when police checked early today. The travellers' defiance of the eviction, brought under Section 61 of the Public Order Act, has angered officers who were preparing to force them to move this morning. Speaking before the operation to evic the travellers, Southend police planning officer Laurie Parker said he was prepared to do "whatever it takes" to get them out of the borough. He added: "We make sure we escort them out of the borough and then we warn the approaching police division." But he said the fact the group hadn't yet packed up by this morning gave the impression they might be digging in their heels this time and might be more of a problem.
