A multi-million pound fast food giant on Canvey is demanding potential employees work up to 24 hours for free - with no guarantee of a job.
The policy at newly opened KFC in the High Street, has appalled students wanting part-time work to pay for their college studies.
Based on the minimum wage, KFC would save at least £86.40 per applicant if they are not given the job.
Potential workers are not given a formal offer until their training is completed - meaning youngsters may work three eight hour shifts for no pay. The drive-thru will eventually pay back the 24 hours work done - only if the applicant gets the job.
A spokeswoman for the franchise, which operates KFC, said: "We make it clear to all new employees that they are required to complete a short period of training prior to a formal job offer being made."
