A scheme to redevelop a former petrol station into a truck stop and haulage depot has got into gear.

Bob Steward, of RT Steward Transport, in Lawford, wants to build the haulage depot on the site of the former Ardleigh service station on the northern side of the A120.

The plan includes removing the existing filling station canopy, a building would be retained as an office and enlarged to include a shower and toilet and there would be a new building put up to be used as a workshop.

The site area, which is currently undeveloped, will be used as a truck stops facility for lorry drivers.

Daytime parking for 28 HGVs could also be provided with a barrier system controlling the number of lorries at the site. There would also be a cafe.

Planning councillors from Tendring Council have had the chance to take a tour of the site where the lorry park will be.

Councillors voted in favour of the recommendation to approve the plans subject to a number of conditions.
