Motorists can expect lengthy delays for at least another week as a famously rough road is resurfaced.

Stock Road, which links Billericay to the village of Stock and beyond, has become unpopular with the town's motorists due to its pitted, rutted surface.

This week, however, engineers moved in to mend and resurface the road for a 1km stretch between St John's School and the Potash Roundabout.

During the work, set to finish next Friday, long delays are expected to hold up motorists moving in and out of the town.

Stock Road resurfacing has coincided with works being carried out at Sun Corner, at the southern end of Billericay High Street, installing a new roundabout.

As part of the scheme, Laindon Road will become a two-way street. Work is also under way to complete the reconstruction of the pavements in the High Street.

A Basildon Council spokesman said: "There will be a traffic light system in place while work is carried out, but we have not set up any specific diversions.

"There will be delays, especially at peak times, so if there is an alternative route available to drivers then we would urge motorists to make plans to take a different route."

The Sun Corner roundabout is set to be completed by the end of September.
