Woodlands School, Takely End, Basildon, invited 280 children, who will start on Monday, to spend two weeks at the school to help them get used to the big change.

While they took part in a variety of lessons and subjects such as art, sport and English, they had the chance to go on trips to the Tate Gallery in London.

Woodlands also organised a summer school for primary children who have excelled in specific areas.

Co-ordinator Lucy Thornton said: "It was a great way to get them used to staff, facilities and some of the lessons as some of the lessons in secondary school are not taught in primary.

"It also helped to get them used to different classes and mix with different children."
