A crackdown on unruly behaviour by students has been launched at a Brentwood school as the new academic year gets underway.
Sawyers Hall College of Science and Technology has introduced a new Code of Conduct for pupils and a zero-tolerance approach to bad behaviour.
A letter has been sent to every parent laying down the new ground rules which include a ban on mobile phones and chewing gum in school.
Pupils who break the rules will now be sent home.
Acting principal Peter Finnegan said in his letter that high standards are expected from all pupils.
It said: "The potential of the students in this college is great and our students are keen to learn. We expect the highest standards of them and I am looking forward to celebrating their successes over the coming months.
"High standards of behaviour are central to our primary objective in aiming for excellence in all aspects of college life. The vast majority of students are fine ambassadors."
Sawyers Hall College was formerly known as Hedley Walter High School.
Mr Finnegan has taken over as head from former principal Barbi Goulding, who has left to study for a doctorate.
Her time in charge was marked by both success and controversy. Last year students staged a classroom strike over plans to change form group arrangements.
And earlier this year, a lollipop lady nearly quit her job after being pelted with a drinks can, water balloons and a stick by students from the school.
