Southend United defender Che Wilson is hoping to cement a regular slot in the Shrimpers' starting line-up after producing a solid performance against Macclesfield Town on Monday.

Che Wilson - out to hold onto first team place

The former Norwich City full back replaced Nicky Nicolau in the Blues' back four but was surprised by his recall to the Roots Hall first team.

"The manager told me after training on Sunday that I would be playing and it came out of the blue for me really," said the 25-year-old player.

"It wasn't something I was expecting but he told me I had an opportunity to show what I could do and that I should try and grab the chance with both hands.

"It was great for me to be back in the team again though and hopefully I can stay in the side now."

Wilson's start against the Silkmen was just his third in six months for the Seasiders and the versatile battler revealed he had been disappointed by his lack of chances at Roots Hall.

"It has been quite frustrating and disappointing not being in the team because I thought I did well in pre-season and was very pleased with way I played," he said.

"I carried on working hard, waiting for a chance and thankfully it came against Macclesfield."
