Traffic police for Braintree - shocked at how many people still do not wear a seatbelt - are warning drivers in their area to belt-up in September or face automatic prosecution.
A police spokesman said officers are also getting tough on mobile phone offenders who persist in flouting the law and put other people's lives at risk.
The warning comes as police start their ninth road safety campaign of the year, with drivers giving them cause for concern following the Easter clampdown, which saw nearly 140 vehicle occupants detected with no seatbelts in one four-hour period.
