Businesses in the Braintree area are being told to take extra precautions following a spate of burglaries.
Police crime reduction adviser Geoff Butler said since the beginning of the year, firms in Braintree and Uttlesford had been broken into and had computer equipment stolen. Some have been hit more than once.
Some were in industrial estates, others in town centres and equipment ranged from fax machines to whole computer systems.
Businesses are being advised to order steel security cable or lockable cases when ordering new computers and make sure all equipment is visibly marked with company name and postcode.
Mr Butler said: "Don't advertise your new equipment by leaving the empty boxes outside for all to see."
