A businessman told how he was launched 10ft across a yard while trying in vain to save his 55-year-old classic car from being destroyed by fire.

Devastated Trevor Matthews, 50, of Ferry Road, Hullbridge, battled with a garden hose to put out the blaze which completely gutted the premises of his company Oceancrown International.

Despite his efforts, Mr Matthews's pride and joy, a 1949 MG YA car in mint condition was also destroyed by the fire.

He estimated the fire in the building, located next to his home, caused £500,000 of damage to stock and equipment.

Mr Matthews said: "I was asleep in bed when my wife woke me about ten-past-three in the morning. When I got down there the fire was where the office was. I tried to get the fire extinguishers, but the heat was too much.

"I then ran round the side and got the garden hose pipe, but the fire went whoosh and threw me back about 10ft."

Dozens of local residents rang the fire brigade as the inferno ripped through the offices and warehouse area.

Huge flames leapt into the air and thick black smoke billowed into the sky.

Around 25 firefighters raced to tackle the blaze which was so ferocious it took them hours to put out.

Oceancrown International imports goods including electric scooters and lights from China and Korea.
