Would-be thieves tried to bamboozle shop staff by asking for bank notes with certain serial numbers.
But despite trying three places, all in West Mersea, each attempt failed.
First they tried Underwoods in Kingsland Road, followed by the Co-op in Bardfield Road then they went into Trading Post in High Street.
In each case the men asked for change in notes with a particular serial number - probably hoping to snatch more in the confusion - but staff were not fooled.
The men four in two cases, two in another - were described as asian, black or dark-skinned and aged 20 to 30. They drove off in a silver Nissan car.
