Credit card workers were today reeling from the news that 80 jobs are to go.
Staff at First Data Europe in Christopher Martin Road, Basildon, have been offered voluntary redundancy in an attempt to avoid compulsory cuts.
A spokeswoman for the credit card processing company said: "Following the completion of First Data's major IT investment programme, Genesis, the company is realigning its UK businesses to further concentrate efforts and resources on growing and expanding its operations.
"First Data has taken the decision to reduce the number of external contractors and has introduced a voluntary redundancy programme, likely to affect 80 staff."
